Valerie is a Senior Strategic Sourcing Specialist at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan, where she has worked in the Procurement Services Department for over 26 years. Prior to that, she was a Purchasing Agent in the private industry for three years. As Senior Strategic Sourcing Specialist, her responsibilities include planning and designing procurement strategies in collaboration with campus customers, preparing and processing bid request, contract negotiation and management, perform cost/price analysis, prepare strategic and benchmark spend reports, implementation of the supplier diversity program by developing and maintaining a network of potential minority suppliers, general procurement, disposal of obsolete equipment, development of e-commerce participation among campus departments and suppliers, support and promote the university’s sustainability initiative, and actively participates in the procurement services strategic planning and implementation process. She is also responsible for the University’s hotel program where is manages and establishes direct bill accounts and negotiates hotel rates. At the University Valerie severed on the Intercultural Advisory Council for three years. She is also a corporate member of the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council (MMSDC) and MMSDC Module leader of the West Michigan Project One Module. Valerie is a member of the Positive Black Women organization where she served as treasurer for over ten years. Valerie is a member of the National Association of Educational Procurement (NAEP), she has been active on both the regional and national levels. She served as the Michigan Regional President in 2008 & 1995, Development Chair, and on the Scholarship Committee. On the national level Valerie received the 2015/16 Bert C. Ahrens Achievement Award. Valerie served as NAEP Board President in 2013-2014. She has been a member of many NAEP committees, including the 2016 Supplier Diversity Institute Steering Committee where she is serving as co-chair of the Marketing and Fundraising Committee and a member of the host committee. She has also served on the Nominating, Awards, Continuing Education, Cooperative Purchasing, Membership, Program, and Public Relations committees. She was Chairperson for two year for the Public Relations Committee and Chairperson for the Continuing Education Committee for one year. Valerie also Co-chaired the Membership Committee in 2004. Valerie is a member on NAEP’s Editorial Board and has been published in NAEP’s professional Journal writing articles on Social Responsibility, LEED and Leadership, Communication, Online Contracts, and Vendor Support for Campus Initiatives, E-procurement, Leadership through Volunteering and Sustainable Agriculture. She served on E & I’s Strategic Sourcing Committee for six years. At Annual Meetings she has often served as moderator for workshop sessions, led the New Attendee Orientation for seven years, and has served as an Annual Meeting Mentor for several years. Valerie is also active in her community serving on the Executive Committee for the Michigan Women’s Foundation. She has served on this committee for over nineteen years. Valerie has a Bachelor of Science Degree from Ferris State University, a Master of Public Administration from Grand Valley State University, and received both her C. P. M. and A.P.P. lifetime certifications.
